Wildflowers are a blooming success for North Wales Housing
Our schemes are abuzz with bees and butterflies and in full bloom as part of our wildflowering efforts across North Wales.
Did you know? Wildflowers provide bees, butterflies and other pollinators with food all year. On a single day in summer, 1 acre of wildflower meadow can contain 3million flowers and produce 1kg of nectar sugar! That’s enough to support nearly 96,000 honeybees every day.
At North Wales Housing, we want to do our bit for the environment and for our residents as well. Over the last few years, we have been working to identify areas that would benefit from wildflowering.
And so far we’ve planted oxeye daisies, common Poppies, Loosestrife, Ragged Robin, yellow rattle and much more in four wildflower meadows. We also have two natural meadows.
As the old proverb goes: Mighty oaks from small acorns grow!
So whilst we have started small and minimised the impact on communal areas and spaces, we are ambitious. Over time we would like to develop more areas and in doing so increase our biodiversity and reduce our carbon footprint.
Lucy Perry, our green-fingered Grounds Manager, who shared these beautiful photos she captured when she was out and about, said:
“At North Wales Housing, we want to create sustainable communities for the future where our residents love the place they live in and make our outdoor spaces more biodiverse.
The feedback from our residents has been so positive. They tell us the presence and the sight of wildflowers is having a really positive impact on their health and wellbeing. And it has enabled the young, and the young at heart, to observe nature at its best.”
If you’re a resident of North Wales Housing, we would love to hear your thoughts and ideas on wildflowering. Is it something you’d like to see us develop in your scheme or in your area? If so, then please message us on FB or email us today at [email protected].
