Helping Residents Live Independently with Home Adaptations

At North Wales Housing, we are committed to helping our residents continue living independently in their homes. So far this year, we have made 93 minor adaptations and completed major adaptations at 31 properties, ensuring our homes are as accessible and comfortable as possible for those who need them.

Making a Real Difference: Resident Stories

Door Widening for Mrs C

Mrs C, who lives in one of our supported flats in Bangor, reached out to us for help in making her home more accessible. As a wheelchair user, she was struggling to move around easily. To support her needs, we removed the kitchen door and frame entirely and widened the shower room door.

The result? A home that better suits her mobility needs and enables her to move around more freely. Mrs C was thrilled with the outcome!

Level Access Shower and Handrails for Sue

Sue, a resident in Llanfairfechan, required adaptations to help her safely navigate her home due to a condition that causes frequent falls. Following a referral, we installed a level access shower and handrails, making daily life much safer for her.

Sue shared how these changes have transformed her home:

“I have a handrail in the garden now, and I’m not scared of getting in the shower anymore as I know I’m not going to trip and fall. Paul and his electrician were great when they came around to do the work. They were even a hit with my pet lurcher, Blue! I’m really happy as they are now putting in an automatic light outside for me, so when Blue goes out at night, I’ll be able to see where he is and call him in.”

The work was completed just a few months after receiving the referral in June, demonstrating our commitment to delivering timely support for those who need it most.

What Adaptations Can We Offer?

We can carry out a range of minor adaptations without the need for medical evidence, making it quick and easy for residents to get the support they need. These include:

  • Grab rails
  • Handrails
  • Drop-down rails
  • Shower seats
  • Half-height steps
  • Key safes

For major adaptations, such as installing stairlifts or level access showers, residents will need an assessment from their local council’s Occupational Therapy Service. This ensures that the right adjustments are made to meet individual needs.
